New Rules Govern Summary Plan Description
The Deptartment of Labor issued a final rule that requires employee
benefits plans to include more specific information in written descriptions
that are sent to the enrollees. The final rule requires group health plans'
summary plan description (SPD) to describe:
- any cost sharing provisions
- any annual or lifetime caps or other limits on benefits under the plan
- the extent to which preventive services are covered
- whether and under what circumstances, existing and new drugs are covered under the plan
- whether and under what circumstances, coverage is provided for medical tests, devices and procedures
