HANDS OFF THE ERGO STANDARD!
OSHA's new ergonomics standard, which could prevent some 1.6 million
repetitive stress injuries a year, is the target of a never-before used legislative
weapon that workplace safety advocates call the "nuclear bomb" of
deregulation. Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) announced last week he would seek to
use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to obliterate the rule. Under the
CRA, if both the House and Senate vote by a simple majority to overturn the
ergonomics standard, OSHA will not be allowed to issue any type of similar
rule unless Congress grants it special permission later. The AFL-CIO and
affiliate unions are mounting a nationwide campaign that includes special
alerts to local unions, central labor councils and state labor federations
plus e-mails and workplace fliers to union members.
